General Bipin Rawat Biography Death Career Family 

General Bipin Rawat was India’s First CDS (Chief of Defence Staff). IAF (Indian Air Force) helicopter crashed at Kunnur in Tamilnadu on 08 December 2021 MI-17v5.

Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat was born in Pauri, Uttarakhand. His father, Laxman Singh Rawat, served the Indian Army and reached the post of Lieutenant-General. His mother was the daughter of a former MLA from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand. He received his formal education at Cambrian Hall School and St Edward’s School, Shimla in Dehradun and joined the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was awarded the Sword of Honour. He was also a graduate from Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), Higher Command Course at Wellington and United States Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was a m.phil. Also done. Degree in Defence Studies as well as Diploma in Management and Computer Studies from University of Madras. For his research on military media strategic studies, he was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.

On December 16, 1978, CDS Bipin Rawat was appointed to the 5th Battalion of 11 Gorkha Rifles, a unit of his father Laxman Singh Rawat. He spent 10 years conducting counter-terrorism operations and worked in various services from majors to current CDS. While holding the post of Major, CDS Bipin Rawat took over the reins of a company at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir. He commanded his battalion with lac in Kibithu as colonel. After being promoted to the rank of Brigadier, he commanded the Multinational Brigade in the Mission VII 5 Sectors of the Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore and a chapter in the Democratic Republic of congo (MONUSCO), where he was twice awarded the praise of force commander.

He was appointed as the 27th Army Chief by the Government of India on 17 December 2016 and took over on 31 December 2016. He also served as the 57th and last chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Indian Army. He was first appointed as CDS on December 30, 2019 and took over on January 1, 2020.

Death Cause:

The Chief of Defence Staff of the Indian Armed Forces was declared brought dead by the Indian Air Force. He was on board the helicopter V5 IAF Mi 175 which crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu while travelling.
