The sport, sometimes known as para lifting, first appeared at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Powerlifting became a Paralympic sport for the first time 20 years later, in 1984. However, the women’s powerlifting discipline was included to the Sydney Paralympic Games in 2000.
