Rex airlines flights : Rex airlines flights “There is some interest in certain elements, but it is more around individual aircraft rather than the business, as opposed to the regional part of the business where it is a bit different,” he told me.
“We are open to a buyer, but I think given the trading performance of the business, that is going to be hard work.”
On RN Breakfast on Wednesday, federal transport minister Catherine King was asked whether the government will intervene to save Rex from collapsing.
While Ms King acknowledged Rex as “incredibly important,” she was quick to emphasize that the government cannot offer assistance “at any cost.”
“I think it is fair to say that we would be reluctant to just throw money at the problem,” she explained.
“What we would want to do is ensure that there is a long-term solution to the security of regional aviation, and we will take time to work our way through that.”
The cautious phrase exemplified the Albanese government’s dilemma in keeping the airline viable without a costly bailout.
Treasurer Jim Charmers proposed that all possibilities be considered, adding, “If there is anything we can do responsibly, we will consider doing it.”
However, aviation researcher Peter Harbison believes Rex should not require government help in order to stay viable as a regional airline.
“In the short term, maybe to get through this current problem, it might need a bit of support,” he told the newspaper.
“But previous to making the huge push into the main city routes, Rex was really functioning pretty profitably, [then] it was struck by COVID, [and] it is also suffering from the global lack of pilots who were being sucked up in a spiral into the larger airlines.
“It also has supply chain concerns since it uses extremely old planes.
“There are a lot of issues around the smaller airlines anyway, but that said, it should be able to operate commercially effectively.”
While support conversations are ongoing, it may be many weeks before employees — and administrators — get a clear sense of how bad things are at the organization.
It might take much longer for a viable road forward to materialize, but if officials do not move soon enough, Rex may become just another airline relegated to aviation history.
