rancho palos verdes california landslide SoCalGas has announced the indefinite discontinuation of natural gas service for more homes in the Portuguese Bend landslide area due to increasing land movement and safety hazards. Starting Friday at approximately 3 p.m., an additional 29 homes will have their gas services cut off as the utility company grapples with a sudden gas line break on Exultant Drive in Seaview that occurred on August 30.

The gas service shutdown affects 16 homes on Admirable Drive, eight homes on Dauntless Drive, and five homes along Palos Verdes Drive, where land movement has made maintaining safe gas connections impossible.

Land movement continues to impact the gas line on Palos Verdes Drive South, which has necessitated the discontinuation of gas service to homes located there, SoCalGas stated.

While safety remains a top priority, the utility company did not provide an estimate on when services might be restored. Residents affected by the service disruption are advised not to attempt reconnecting their gas service or using alternative fuel sources like propane. SoCalGas emphasized that these makeshift solutions are unsafe in the context of active ground instability.

We understand this situation remains difficult and uncertain for many in the community, SoCalGas added in a statement, acknowledging the hardships residents are facing.

The Portuguese Bend area, known for its long history of geological instability, continues to pose challenges for local infrastructure and services. SoCalGas is working closely with geological experts and local authorities to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they assess when conditions may become safe again. For now, residents are urged to remain patient as the company prioritizes safety over convenience.

As the land continues to shift, impacted residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow guidance from SoCalGas and local officials on how to navigate this challenging time.
