Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar is India’s most popular and respected singer whose tenure of six decades is full of achievements. Whose voice has given music to the world of music for more than six decades. India’s ‘Swara Kokila’ Lata Mangeshkar has sung more than 50,000 songs in 25 languages. Hearing his voice, sometimes tears came in someone’s eyes, and sometimes the soldiers standing on the border got support. Lata ji is still single, she has devoted herself completely to music. But her identity has been as a playback singer in Indian cinema. Along with her sister Asha Bhosle, the biggest contribution of Lata ji has been in film singing.
Background Lata Mangeshkar Biography
Kumari Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Her father Dinanath Mangeshkar was a skilled theater singer. Dinanath started teaching music to Lata when she was five years old. His sisters Asha, Usha and Meena also used to learn with him. Lata also studied with ‘Aman Ali Khan Sahib’ and later with ‘Amanat Khan’. Lata Mangeshkar has always been an example of God-given melodious voice, lively expression and incredible ability to grasp things very quickly. Due to these characteristics, this talent of his was recognized very soon. But it was only at the young age of five that you got the opportunity to act in a play for the first time. It must have started with acting, but your interest was only in music.
His father died in the year 1942. During this time she was only 13 years old. Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), owner of Navyug Chitrapat Film Company and his father’s friend, took care of his family and helped Lata Mangeshkar become a singer and actress.
The road to success is never easy. Lata ji also had to face many difficulties in making her place. Many musicians had initially refused to give you work because of the thin voice. Lata ji was compared with the famous playback singer of that time, Noor Jahan. But gradually you started getting work on the strength of your passion and talent. The amazing success of Lata ji made Lata ji the strongest woman in the film world.
Lata ji also has the distinction of recording maximum number of songs. Apart from film songs, you have also sung non-filmy songs very well. Lata ji’s talent got recognition in 1947, when she got a chance to sing a song in the film “Aapki Seva Mein”. After this song, you got a recognition in the film world and got a chance to sing many songs one after the other. It would not be irrelevant here to mention some of these famous songs. What is called your first Shahkar song was “Aayega Aane Wala” sung in 1949, after which the number of your fans started increasing day by day. Meanwhile you worked with all the famous musicians of that time. Anil Biswas, Salil Choudhary, Shankar Jaikishan, S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Naushad, Madanmohan, C. Ramchandra etc. all the musicians considered your talent as iron. Lata ji has sung songs in great movies like Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Do Bigha Zameen, Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, etc. You added to the popularity of these films with the magic of your voice in films like “Mahal”, “Barsaat”, “Ek Thi Ladki”, “Badi Behen” etc. Some of his famous songs during this period were: “O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aai” (Parakh-1960), “Aaja Re Pardesi” (Madhumati-1958), “Itna Na Mujhe Tu Pyaar Badha” (Chhaya- 1961), “Alla Tero Naam” ”, (We both-1961), “Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujhe Par”, (Junglee-1961), “Yeh Sama” (Jab Jab Flowers Khile-1965) etc.
Swar Kokila Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last at the age of 92 on 6 February 2022 at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.
