Located around 250 km from Delhi Firozabad is famous for its bangle manufacturing industry. The district comprises major towns like Shikohabad Tundla and Sirsaganj. Most of the people here are associated with glass related business.
According to historians the ancient name of this district was Chandrawar. This name was derived from the name of King Chandrasen who was the ruler at that time. In 1194 A.D. there was a big war between King Chandrasen and Muhammad Ghori in which King Chandrasen had to face defeat. Even today in Firozabad on the banks of river Yamuna is located Chandrawar Nagar which has reached the state of ruins due to lack of maintenance.
How did Firozabad get its name
The name of Chandrawar district was changed during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar. At that time Akbar had sent his mansabdar Firoz Shah to capture Chandrawar. Firoz Shah along with his Mughal soldiers committed a massive massacre at Chandrawar.
Historians say hundreds of Hindus were killed during that period and their families were forced to convert. Temples in the district were also vandalised. Pleased with this campaign of Firoz Shah Akbar changed the name of Chandrawar to Firozabad.
