Asteroid hitting earth Philippines : The asteroid, 2024 RW1, is just the ninth to be discovered before colliding with Earth’s atmosphere, according to the European Space Agency.
A minor asteroid on a collision course with Earth safely destroyed in the atmosphere above the Philippines in a spectacular “fireball” flare, according to NASA.
Astronomers in Arizona saw the asteroid, which measured around 1 meter (3 feet) across, before it broke apart above the western Pacific Ocean near Luzon Island in the Philippines on Wednesday at around 16:46 GMT.
The space rock, dubbed 2024 RW1, is “only the ninth that humankind has ever spotted before impact,” according to the European Space Agency (ESA), but asteroids of this size approach Earth every two weeks without posing a threat.
NASA’s Asteroid Watch website predicted that the impact will result in a “fireball” visible from the Philippines’ east coast, leading many to share photos on social media.
NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office said numerous sensors detected the asteroid’s safe impact.
