An Alabama high school football player died Friday night after suffering a head injury during his team’s season opener, according to his parents’ social media posts.
Caden Tellier, 16, died Saturday after sustaining a brain injury in the Selma private school’s home opener on Friday night, according to his family’s social media posts. Our son, Caden Tellier, has met Jesus face to face,” wrote the boy’s parents, Arsella Slagel Tellier and Jamie Tellier, in a Facebook post.
“Everyone who knows Caden knows him to be kind, kind, and loving, and he is giving of himself once more, as is his nature. His life affected many people, and his death will save many more. We will walk out these next few days with him in his earthly body, knowing that his spirit is happy in heaven.” Bryan Oliver, the headmaster of John T. Morgan Academy, also confirmed the teen’s death on Facebook.
“There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family,” he said in a statement, referring to Tellier as “a student, a friend, an athlete, and most importantly, a Christ follower.” Tellier was hurt during the third quarter of a Morgan-Southern Academy game, according to the Montgomery Advertiser, and was taken to a Birmingham hospital.
In response, John T. Morgan Academy has cancelled all school activities for the week.
The Alabama Independent School Association published a statement supporting the academy’s decision and expressing sympathies.
“As a small school, Morgan Academy feels this tragedy even more deeply, and the Alabama Independent School Association is here to offer any support and resources to help them grieve,” AISA Executive Director Michael McLendon said in a statement.
